- An evening invitation. Bengali weddings are generally held at night, with the preceding day's Gaye Holud as a separate daytime event.
Who invites whom
Issued by the parents, often with the invitation naming the bride as 'our daughter' and using the family's ancestral home address.
Timing & dates
Six weeks is typical. Bengali weddings cluster in the winter months and in specific auspicious periods, so venues and guests are both in demand at the same time.
2026–27 date guidance
Bengali weddings follow dates published in the Bengali panjika. Weddings are not held during the month of Bhadra or during Malamas. The winter months following Durga Puja and Kali Puja are a heavy wedding period. Confirm the lagna with your family's purohit.

Aiburobhatআইবুড়োভাত
A final meal served to the bride or groom as an unmarried person, hosted by their own family.
Gaye Holudগায়ে হলুদ
Turmeric paste sent from the groom's house and applied to the bride, and vice versa. A daytime celebration in its own right.
Dodhi Mangalদধি মঙ্গল
An early-morning meal of curd and rice taken by the couple at dawn on the wedding day.
Bor Boronবর বরণ
The groom's welcome at the venue by the bride's mother and the women of her family.
Saat Paakসাত পাক
The bride, seated on a low wooden seat called a piri, is carried around the groom seven times.
Shubho Drishtiশুভ দৃষ্টি
The bride lowers the betel leaves covering her face and the couple look at each other for the first time.
Mala Badalমালা বদল
The couple exchange garlands three times.
Sindoor Daanসিঁদুর দান
The groom applies sindoor to the bride's hair parting.
Bidaayবিদায়
The bride's farewell from her family home.
Bou Bhaatবৌ ভাত
A reception hosted by the groom's family, where the bride serves a meal to her new family.

- The lagna (auspicious time) for the wedding
- Separate details for Gaye Holud, the wedding, and Bou Bhaat — these are three distinct events on different days
- Both families' names and their ancestral addresses where observed
