Baby Shower

A celebration held in the later months of pregnancy, blessing the expectant mother. Known as Seemantham in Telugu and Tamil households, Godh Bharai in the north, Valaikappu in Tamil Nadu, and Dohale Jevan in Maharashtra.

Who invites whom
Usually hosted by the expectant mother's parents, or in some traditions by her in-laws. Married women of both families are invited with particular importance.

Two to three weeks. Held in the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, so the date is set by that rather than by convenience.

Seemanthamసీమంతం
The parting of the expectant mother's hair and the blessing ritual, performed by elders.
Valaikappuவளைகாப்பு
Glass bangles are placed on the mother's arms — their sound is believed to reach the child.
Godh Bharaiगोद भराई
The mother's lap is filled with fruit, sweets and gifts by the women of the family.
Dohale Jevanडोहाळे जेवण
A meal prepared to the mother's cravings, served to her with ceremony.

The mother is blessed by the married women present.
